JM Group Benefit Consultants

JM Group has served Canadian businesses with strategic group benefits solutions since 1991. Founded under the leadership of Michael Tse, the firm was built on a commitment to transparency, integrity, and advocacy for employers and their employees.  Today, JM Group continues Michael’s Legacy by delivering thoughtful, sustainable benefit strategies designed for long-term success.

A well-designed group benefits program does more than provide coverage—it strengthens workplaces, supports people, and contributes to long-term organizational stability. Our role is to help employers make informed, confident decisions that balance cost, competitiveness, and employee well-being.

We are a boutique, independent group benefits advisory firm with more than three decades of industry experience serving BC employers. Over the years, we have worked with businesses of all sizes to simplify the complexities of employee benefits through transparent advice, detailed analysis, and hands-on support.

Our Story

JM Group Benefit Consultants was founded in 1991 with a clear purpose: to help employers navigate group benefits with honesty, clarity, and care. From the beginning, the firm focused on building trusted relationships and designing benefit programs that genuinely support employees—not just on paper, but in real life. As the benefits landscape has grown increasingly complex, JM Group has remained committed to thoughtful guidance, transparent advice, and solutions that evolve alongside the businesses and people they serve.

Today, the firm continues under the leadership of Kathryn Chao, whose consultative, education-first approach builds on decades of trust while thoughtfully guiding JM Group forward. By remaining independent, locally rooted, and intentionally boutique, JM Group delivers personalized service, proprietary cost advantages, and long-term partnerships that larger firms often cannot provide. The result is a benefits experience grounded in integrity, responsiveness, and continuity—supporting BC employers in taking care of their people today and into the future.

Who We Are

Kathryn Chao

Kathryn Chao is the Principal Advisor of JM Group Benefit Consultants, bringing more than 16 years of experience in group benefits consulting and plan design.

After completing her degree at Simon Fraser University, Kathryn began her career with a leading Canadian insurance provider, where she developed deep expertise across all aspects of employee group benefits — from plan design and underwriting to renewals and long-term cost management. During this time, she worked with employers ranging from small, closely held businesses to large organizations with complex benefit needs.

Over the course of her career, Kathryn not only supported clients directly but also trained and mentored hundreds of advisors. This experience revealed a persistent gap in industry education and transparency, shaping her consultative, education-first approach. Today, she focuses on helping employers clearly understand their benefit programs, anticipate future costs, ,and build sustainable plans aligned with their business goals.

As an independent advisor, Kathryn is committed to providing thoughtful guidance, continuity, and direct oversight ensuring clients receive senior-level advice and a long-term partnership rather than transactional service.

Outside of her professional work, Kathryn values community involvement and meaningful experiences and she enjoys spending time with family and friends.
